Winter- the season of oh so many holidays!  My favorite thing about these cheerful occasions is that they all seem to center around one thing- LIGHT! Just as the days seem to be getting shorter and the nights darker and colder, December holidays all seem to remind us of the same theme- there is light in togetherness, and warmth in love and family!  Christmas has its twinkling lights, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa light their own celebratory candles, and the New Year is often marked by fireworks- burning away the past and welcoming the new!  Whether they are candles, strings of electric lights or the toasty glow of the fireplace, light is a wonderful way to add to sparkle and ambiance your holiday party or winter wedding-
Here are TME’s Top Five Favorite Ways to add light to any winter celebration!

Five- Luminarias

Consider lining a pathway with candles (either LED or real) set inside white paper bags to add a festive touch to your entryway. You can add holiday cut-outs, lace patterns, or even tiny pinholes for that “starlight” effect.  They’d look stunning heading up the stairs of a chapel for an evening ceremony, or marking the entrance to the reception.  For an at home celebration, put one on each side of your front steps. Instant glam!

Four- Scented Candles

Scented candles appeal to multiple senses and add a sweet touch to any holiday party- nothing says Happy Holidays like the smell of sugar cookies, evergreen trees or cranberries.  Yankee Candle and Slatkin and Co. make amazing scents to fill your whole house with a sweet smell and a warm glow!

Three- Lighted Wreaths

Use light to jazz up your holiday wreath.  Battery operated LED lights can be added to make that door decoration pop!  You can even use smaller lighted wreaths as candle rings to add to your centerpieces or decorate your holiday table.

Two- Hanging Lanterns

When considering lighting, don’t forget about the ceiling!  Hanging paper lanterns are a fun way to add texture, dimension and light to your décor.  They come in all sorts of funky colors, and you can add your own touch by using pretty ribbon to hang them.  Not feeling the paper vibe??  Mason jars make sweet lanterns as well as adding a down-home feel.

One- Twinkle lights

This traditional holiday staple can really add to the festive atmosphere.  Not just for trees and windows, you can use them to outline a doorway, decorate a backdrop, or even light up your buffet table! Combined with festive additions like glass and crystal ornaments, a few pinecones, or some holly berries, you’ve got a stunning wintertime effect that’s sure to please!

From the crystalline twinkle of icicle lights strung from the trees, to the warmth of a toasty fireplace flame, holiday lights are everywhere, and they serve as reminder that home, love and family are what the holidays are all about!

There are so many things to love about the holiday season. The cookies, decorations, get-togethers, cookies, first snow showers … did I mention cookies? ; )

For some reason though, I have a bit of a wreath obsession. I’d love to have them in every room of the house all year long! It’s taking every ounce of self-restraint to not order 30 right this second.

This year I’m totally inspired by all that sparkles: gold, silver, metallic, and anything glittery. What other part of the year do you get to dress up, bring sparkly things into your home (without it being gaudy), and raise a toast several times in one month? About Brandi…

Brandi’s love for culture, style, and creativity stems from her studies abroad and background in clothing, textiles, and design. In 2001 she received a fashion design internship in Spain and then later went on to a fashion and visual merchandising venture for a major retailer in Seattle in 2002.

In addition to the fashion world, Brandi also spent a few years in the mortgage industry. This time proved to be incremental in refining the organizational and financial skills she still uses today.

How did you get started in your business?
I designed and created my own pocket fold wedding invitations back in November 2008, less than a year later I designed my cousin’s Sweet 16 circus themed invitations, friends and family loved them, so I decided to do some researching for ways to sell my designs. A lot of my work is through referrals but I am trying to get more and more people to order through my shop.


How long have you been doing it?
I signed up with Etsy in September 2009 but I didn’t start posting listings until October. It was very slow at first because I had to do research on how to promote and be active on Etsy. I would say I have been actively selling and promoting since January 2010.


Describe your style.

When I design I like to think of what I would like for my event, of course taking into account my client’s theme. I consider my style fashionable, unique and pretty. I take inspiration from colors I wear and fashion magazines, even though these are invitations and not a piece of clothing, I like to think of them as a fashion “accessory” for your event.


Do you do have any other jobs?

Yes. I currently work full time as an accounts manager, I am responsible for Accounts Payable and Receivable. But my passion, is design. I love my part time job, it is what drives. I easily spend hours on hours designing and creating. I hope to one day be able to work on my shop full time.

What else would you be doing for a living?
Ever since I was a little girl, I have always loved colors, painting, designing – it takes me to a whole other world. I enjoy it very much. If I wasn’t designing invitations, I would be designing shoes and clothes :)


What is something that few people know about you?
One of my life long dreams is to become a mom. I am very family oriented and family is very important to me. Having a family and being a great mom, I would say, is one of my most important goals.


Do you have any advice to offer engaged couples or those planning a special event?
Yes. Don’t leave anything for the last minute! Second, if you want to have something at your wedding or special event, GET IT! You will regret not having it later. And third, visit my shop :) I can design your invitations and matching coordinates especially for you :)


Would you like to say anything about your friends at Creative Custom Card Boxes?
Yes, thank you for the inspiration :) I know that you also started as a fellow NJ board “knottie” who made your business from designing your own wedding card box. I hope to one day be as successful and popular as you.
